1. Choice A: What characteristics and qualities do you see in the people at your internship that you'd like to develop in yourself?
I feel like every single person that works here has a good heart. I know the pay is not amazing here and a lot of the people have degrees and could be getting paid better at other places but they care about the seniors. They all have realationships with at least 1 or more of them. They all work really hard because they want to help as many people as they can. When I first came here I thought well it's just food, they could do it them selves or have there family or hire somebody but I have personally seen people that have no family at all, that don't have a ton of money to pay for care, and that are all alone. They live for seeing the volinteers that are their friends now and need the food that is delivered. When I leave here I know that when I go out and look for a job it's not going to be about the money, it's going to be about what I'm passionate for and genuenlly care about.
2. Choice B: What new appreciations (for who? of what?) have you gained through internship that you did not have before? How did you develop these appreciations?
In just a week I have learned to apprieate the little things. I have heard some of the stories about how seniors were fine one day and not alive the next. But I know that those seniors died knowing that at least 1 person cared about them, the volinteer. I don't know what my life has in store for me or when it might end but it brings be comfort knowing that their are companies like this that actually care about people not money. You rarely find people like that. I have gained a new appreciation for the whole company! I plan on volinteering here once my internship is over.
My Day:
Today was a good day, I made my story board for the video. I emailed Roscoph asking to use some of his stuff too. We had a meeting today as well, it turns out St. Pauls really likes our ideas! My excitment hasn't died down at all since starting this project. I am just sad we only have 2 weeks left. I feel lile this is flying by right past me. KiKi one of the main people I work with quit last friday, her mom is dying and she wants to focus on school. I felt super bad for her. I wished her well when I lef though and there's not much else I could do. Everything went on in the office, it was as if she was never even here, I think everybody didn't want to scare us because she was a pretty important person. It's raining super hard today, I feel kind of relaxed by it though, I like hearing it the windows and the deck outside. Over all today was pretty plain.

Internship Day 7
I asked 4 questions to Patrick...
1. Why did you choose Meals-on-Wheels?
He said he worked with Debbie before and she called him and let him know there was an opening. He likes the way she runs things and got the job!
2. How has this company impacted your life?
He said that he enjoys working for a company that gives back. "It's very rewarding!"
3. Where were you before this job?
He worked at the child abuse prevention foundation for a year and before that he worked in retail for a long time.
4. How has working for a non profit impacted your views on the work-world?
He said all the people he works with now are here to help the seniors not just because it's a job. He is very dedicated to helping as well. "this job makes me really happy"

This is Patrick and I. He's super sweet! :)
My Day:
Today was an okay day. I talked to Libby and Christian and Emilie today, it was good to see how their internships were going. KiKi quit, it was super sad but I'm glad she's going back home to spend time with her mom. We had a meeting today showing our projects and how they have been going. I had a full packet of info for Debbie and I did research on jelly braclets. hunger is orange and they cost around 50 cents each. I know I'm pretty amazing! Today was okay, just a downer on the end saying goodbye to KiKi. :(

Internship Day 6
1. Who I am Interviewing and Why:
I think I am going to interview Patrick. He showed me around the first couple of days and I right now I feel the closest to him out of all the other adults. When I interview him I plan on asking why he chose Meals on Wheels and How this company has impacted his life, Where he was before he got this job and if working for a non Profit has impacted his views in the world. Because I know you have to be a really caring person to work here.
2. When:
Well, I am going to go talk to him right now! :) I will ask and take notes and than type it all up when I get home tommorow or maybe later tonight.
My Day:
Today was A LOT better than yesterday! I got to present all my ideas and research from yesterday in a meeting. It was super profesional and reminded me of POL'S!It went really well though. I feel like I'm starting to fit in better and get the hang of things. I found out my final project, FINALLY! I'm planning a charity event having a doggy costume contest. It goes with the new waggin wheels program and the new website were building. I'm super excited to started. I just had lunch and almost burnt off my tounge do to way too hot pasta, but over all thats been the only down fall of today, which I guess is good. Oh and the other 2 intern's teach came. She seemed realyl sweet and I liked her black flats a lot! She got them at Forever21 I think. I left around 3. I had a dentist app. I have to wear rubber bands now -_- im bummed.

This was our first real meeting, I'm the black sleeve in the back. You can't really see me, but I owned that meeting!

Internship Day 5
Internship projects, continued!
Project Title:
Bark For Change!
Project Description:
We will be having a street fair! My idea is the main event too! Im super stoked! Its a costume contest for dogs! its called Bark For Change. It's $20 to enter and the winning dog becomes the face to our waggin wheels program on the new website.
Project Schedule:
Today we are having a meeting planning our schedule. Mainly it will be Brain storming, reseach, contact, creative.
Materials & Equipment needed: We need to use the compu
ter to find contacts and people high up in the girl scouts that we can present to and get the word spread.
Project Documentation:
We will keep track of our work mostly on computers and folders of research. We also want to make a video that will be on the new website. When we are done I feel like we will have a full plan of what the fundraiser will look like, weather it's in a power point or and excel graph.
My Day:
Today was a really long day! I litterally sat on a computer for 6 and half hours. We had to do research on other non profit orginations to get ideas for other fundraisers and find contact info for certain companies. I had a raging headache and painful heels on! Over all today wasn't my favorite day, but I finally got my project! There was a party downstairs and got really good red velvet cake though. At 3 I left only to fall asleep around 7 at night. I was so tired!

This is when I officially went crazy! Sitting at a computer for 6 hours killed me!

Internship Day 4
Internship Project Questions:
1. What academic skills could you use on the job?
I think with meals on wheels you have to be good at numbers to an extent. The main project idea I have is to plan a fund raiser event. I will be having a budget to spend and a goal to make. I think the This American Life project will really help me.
2. What forms of collaboration could you use in a project?
I don't understand what this is saying. I'm pretty sure I'm working by myself.
3. What technical skills can you use at your internship?
Well, one of the things we are doing right now are rebuilding the website and sending out a news letter. Today I was working on finding pictures on websites to buy.
4. What new things can you learn while working at your site?
I feel as if I can learn alot from working here. I have already learned how to use a fancy copy machine, it's actually pretty cool. I also want to learn how to plan a good fund raiser with the other adults. I feel as if I can really take that back with me to ASB.
5. How can you exhibit, showcase or otherwise share your work?
We don't plan on having a fund raiser for a while, but I could show my main goal, make an excel spread sheet showing where money is coming in and out. I could also make a bar graph saying if x number of people came we could make y amount of money.
6. How can your work or your skills & abilities help your company or organization?
Meals On Wheels runs mostly on donations, so having a fund raiser will benifit them emensly! Were talking about having soup, better deserts, we give gifts and discounts to people. Over all a fund raiser would help A TON!
My Day:
Today was a longer day. I went to the kitchen and helped out there. I really didn't realize how much work is done there, there is SO much double checking! I went out to deliver meals to the voliteers with Kim. She was super sweet, she got me a Dr. Pepper and a snickers so she's good in my book! That took till about 1:00. When we got back we helped orginize all the hot plates, ice packs and coolers. We went back to the main office around 1:45. The other interns left, but I stayed a while to see if they needed me to do anything else. KiKi had me looking up pictures for our news letter coming out. I think I earned some points cause i didn't leave til 2:45, yesterday i left at 2:30. I've been staying a litte later than the other two and finishing up stuff. I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it. I'm just excited to get my project tommorow and not have to keep doing runs and stuff. I want to start on something! People in the office I think like me, I try be as out going as possible, they now know me as the "funny girl with a lot of pets," haha. I guess i could be called worse so whatever!

Internship Day 3
1. What skills would you like to develop at your site?
At my site I would really just like to get an inside look at a real work enviorment. I want to be able to help with the company and work a little bit on my profesionalism, work ethic, and keeping a posative attitude. With Meals On Wheels there aren't deffinate skills you need, you just really have to belive in the company and support the clients.
2. What interests do you have regarding the work done at your site?
I did Meals On Wheels when I was younger with my Aunt and cousins and I really believe in the orginization. Some of the people are all alone, no friends and no family so getting a simple meal a day and human contact keeps them alive, litterally.
3. What needs can you address (needs your mentor has, your company has, etc.) based on your skills and interests?
Like I said before the only need that I should have is to be a caring, trustworthy, and hard wroking intern. I feel like I am all of the above.
My day:
Today I went on a run with Martha, that means to go deliver the actual meals, I had a lot of fun. The people were very grateful and it was touching how much they cared about just 10 minutes of my time and a meal. I got there at 8 and left around 2:30. I also made binders and started looking for pictures for the new website. I felt really welcome and like I had been working there for years. I had about an hour of down time were I was just waiting for stuff to print or copy. I can't wait to just get my project and start working. I think it is going to be help building the website and planning a fund raiser. I have a few ideas already!

Internship Day 1

This is an example of the dots, each color represents a route and each pin or dot represents a person.

This shocked me! This huge map is just of the metro area. There is 4 stations. There are so many dots on the map that represent people. Its crazy, there is one lady who maps out routes and puts them on a map and than in binders and gives them to the drivers to deliver the food.
MY DESK!
This is where I will be working most of the time. I plan on staying in the building most of the time, but I will probably be going on runs every now and than and helping where ever I am needed.
This is Debbie Case, my main mentor. Our dress is pretty casual, thank god! She seems super sweet and has a good sense of humor so I'm pretty sure were going to get along great.
This is the front of my building, Meals on Wheels greater San Diego Inc. It's in Old Town, next to my FAV. Mexican restaurant Freds!
ECONOMIC QUESTIONS:
I asked how the economic problems we are facing impacted Meals On Wheels donations. What Debbie said pleasently surprised me. Because food is a "need" thing, dontations haven't faultered as much as other orginizations such as the arts. Orginizations that focus on food or shelter haven't been hit as hard, so Meals on Wheels is still thriving.
I was planning on asking if the number of meals needed were increasing or decreasing, but Debbie answered it on her own. Because of the generations, the elderly aren't focused on as much in peoples families, so there are more people getting Meals on Wheels.
MY DAY:
Well, my meeting didn't start untill 2:00. I talked to Dawn the day before and she said I didn't have to come to school before, so I woke up around 9 and ate a bowl of Special K (with red berries.) Than I took a shower, blowdryed my hair, did my makeup and waited around for 2. I left at 1:15 out of sheer boredom and excitement to get my assignment. When I first arrived to my internship I sat down and waited. About 15 minutes later Debbie walked out and the other interns walked in. The 4 of us went into the conference room and chatted for a while, just about what the company is about and what our oppertunities were. Next, we went on a tou, I met a ton of people. I met Ashley's mom, the senior that goes to our school, she seems super sweet. Than we went back and talked in the main conference room, it was bigger. Debbie told us about different places we could work, but I got my eye set on planning a fundraiser for the yourth in San Diego. Unfortinetly, Debbie had a loss in the family so she asked I not come in till Monday, so I miss a day. But Monday we get to go on roughts and work hands on with the volinteers, to get a " better understanding of the company." I am so excited to get working and get over the begining akwardness. The other 2 interns go to international, no worries though I'll show them Media kids are way better. They both actually knew a lot of the people know so I'm sure we will be friends. I'm not really nervous about anything. I'm located in Old Town so I talked a few people in going to Freds, my FAVORITE mexican food resterant on tuesday for taco tuesday. They all seemed really welcoming. I left around 3:15ish, I was excited to call my pops and tell him about the interesting people I met and the ideas I already have for a funsraiser.

About My Company!
- maddie meals on wheels
- Meals On Wheels is an amazing company! The main goal is to deliver healthy meals to elders unable. To some it may just seems like food, but some of our clients are all alone and us visiting them makes their life better. There are 100 to 120 volinteers a day and 19 routes to deliver meals. There are 4 places we work out of, Metro, South County, East county, and North Country.
